Story Time

I have detailed childhood memories of family members nodding along with a smile as I held them captive, sharing every detail of the most recent story to have consumed me. I was never great at summarizing books or writing book reports because to me, every part of the story felt important. From the Very Hungry Caterpillar and Goodnight Moon to Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, books sustained me (and not just through personal pan pizzas). I loved holding them. I loved smelling them. I loved everything about them.

Like so many others, I drifted away from reading in high school and college when it felt like a chore. I started my career, got married, and became a mom to two incredible kids who keep life busy, loud, and full of love. I poured my love of reading into them, filling their bookshelves, spending quiet time reading together, and commemorating trips with books. I started reading again here and there when books were recommended to me, but had a hard time finding time and gave up on it again.

Then, in the fall of 2025 I started a small business called Brew and Brush Sign, Co., painting brown paper banners for special events and selling "Blind Date" book bundles through a local shop. I asked friends who read for recommendations and researched popular titles, but so wanted to be able to participate in the conversation, especially as I found mom after mom who was finding themselves again through books. I decided, despite strong opposition from my perfectionist "it has to be a physical book curled up under a blanket" self, to take a crack at audiobooks and turned on Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. Halfway through Iron Flame, I had to hold the book and by the time I finished Onyx Storm, I knew I needed to own them.

Today, I am an avid reader of physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks (with the help of my two littles who ensure ample reading time throughout the night). My favorite stories are high stakes and full of fantasy (both the magical kind and the could be real-life kind) with a good helping of romance. I constantly chase the feeling of finding a story that is impossible to put down and stays with me long after I turn the last page. I am so excited to create a community of people who want to find their way back to reading, those who are just returning, and those who never left on this island I love.
